Käserei Engenlauenen-Alp

Peter Portmann · Obermoos · 6170 Schüpfheim

The Portmanns are among the oldest alpine cheesemaking families in Entlebuch. Peter Portmann manages a large, 60-hectare alp on the boundary between Schüpfheim and Hasle, at an altitude of 1294 metres. Twenty-five of his own cows graze here. Every day, Susanna makes alpine Sbrinz or alp cheese out of 500 litres of milk produced by the couple’s own cows. The milk supply is topped off by milk from the neighbouring alp, managed by Peter’s brother. Some five tonnes are produced annually. In 2014, the Portmann’s alp cheese won third prize at the OLMA Swiss Fair for Agriculture & Food in the hard cheese category.
